What I’m Thankful for This Year

This year there are plenty of things I’m thankful for. I believe that there is a creator who sustains life, so for me, every moment of my life and all my blessings are from God and His grace. I’m very thankful for that. I’m also thankful for the health of my family and my own health. We just recently got a new addition to our family, so my wife and I are super excited and thankful for the new child in our lives.

Every day I get to come in and work with the best team I’ve ever been a part of, and I’m just so thankful for the team members who put their faith and trust in this organization and contribute so much.

We try to be a positive impact on the community around us. I am very thankful for the community that I live in. We generally do not have a lot of unrest or civil issues. We’re pretty low-key and this is a great place to live in. The community has been very good to me, my family, and this organization and we’re very thankful for that.

As we’ve gone through the last couple of years with COVID, society has changed profoundly. There are lots of people who are tense and on-edge. We’ve even failed in certain situations, so I’m very thankful for my customers’ patience. It can be very challenging to meet the demands of others, but people have patiently waited for us to solve those problems and be better in the future. That patience goes a long way.

If you have any plumbing or HVAC issues in your home, reach out to the team at Wisler Plumbing & Air by contacting us online or giving us a call at 540-483-9382.

Things I Learned from My Mom

In the last post, “Things I Learned from My Dad,” I talked about some of the things I’ve learned from my dad. I also picked up quite a few things from my mom while I was growing up. I remember it was very common for her to be up and busy at around 4:00 or 5:00 in the morning. Not everyone in my family is a morning person, so being an early bird is definitely something that I must have http://#gotten from her. I’m most productive in the early hours of the day—I’m not a night person and I like to go to bed relatively early, too.

There were always things to do around the house when I was growing up. I’d join my mom in cooking, cleaning—and this may surprise some people—sewing. My mom loved sewing, quilting, and those kinds of activities. Somewhere around the age of 4 to 9 I picked up sewing, mainly because that’s what I’d see her doing. Now, I’m not saying I’m technically proficient enough to be a seamstress, but I do know how to sew on a button or maybe sew a pillow together.

My mom also ran the books for the company at our home office while I was very young. I can remember working on the computer, entering payables or doing other types of data entry whenever I had time after I finished my homework. I really enjoyed being exposed to some of the office administration and bookkeeping side of the business. Although I worked in the field early on in my full-time career, I could handle office tasks thanks to my childhood data entry work. I think it also gave me greater empathy for my office staff. I could more readily relate to certain situations, and it was definitely an invaluable experience.

One of the things my mom would tell me as a child was, “Can’t never could.” When I hear someone say that they can’t do something, I always think that they probably never will. Whenever you face what appears to be a very big challenge in front of you, just keep a positive, optimistic outlook and be confident that you can get it done.

The Roanoke Rescue Mission’s Story

The most amazing thing about the Roanoke Rescue Mission is its history and how it came to be. The founder, Gus Johnson, actually grew up in Chicago. While suffering from alcoholism, he went to Chicago’s United Mission to get sober and ended up going through a crazy transformation. He soon met the woman he would marry after knowing her for just 8 days.

Gus and his wife moved to the Roanoke area specifically to do mission work. When they arrived in 1948 they opened up what is now the Roanoke Rescue Mission. It has been in service and helping the community ever since, and the Johnson family has led the organization up until a couple of years ago.

Today, the Roanoke Rescue Mission mainly helps the homeless population by providing meals and emergency shelter, but they also do many other things. They have a free clinic, a drug rehab program, and they offer all kinds of services including training for spiritual growth and employment. They just do a tremendous amount of good for the community.

The Rescue Mission is a very sustainable organization with a lot of different avenues to help people. We have been there to help serve meals in the evening, and we plan on continuing to support them in the years to come. If you want to know more about the Rescue Mission, visit their website, where you can find out the organization’s whole story and background. For anyone in the area who wants to visit the mission, head over to 4th Street SE right around the Elm downtown area.

The Blue Ridge area has a lot of fun, outdoorsy activities. The GO Outside Festival takes place in October here in Roanoke, which is really just about people having fun outside. It’s right on the Roanoke River Greenway at the base of Mill Mountain. This is a fun event to enjoy the outdoors and do a lot of different things.

Another fun one is the Blue Ridge Folklife Festival, which takes place at Ferrum College. There are lots of local businesses and churches, and it’s really about the history of that particular area. They also have farming demonstrations that can be a lot of fun for kids. The event always takes place on the 4th Saturday in October.

The Blue Ridge Kite Festival in Salem is tons of fun for the kids. It normally has thousands of people attending, so it’s a pretty big deal. Everybody brings their kites along to fly during the event, which takes place in April.

The Dickens of a Christmas in downtown Roanoke takes place over several weekends in December on Friday nights right in the center of the square. There are lots of street performers and other fun things to do. As long as the weather isn’t too cold it can be a ton of fun for kids to go and watch. It’s just a fun time of year in general.

It’s pretty well known in our community that we provide breakfast to our team every morning. We sincerely care about the safety and well being of our people. I feel that healthy families eat together and communicate with each other, and what better time to do so than at the beginning of the day? Breakfast time is the best opportunity to talk about the events that happened the day before. There’s also something about food that creates an atmosphere where people feel comfortable communicating.

Breakfast, in my opinion, is the most important meal of the day. We want to make sure everyone starts their morning off well-fed with a good source of energy. We usually get the day started at around 6:30 to 7:00 a.m. It’s really hard for people to get up early, get ready, and eat breakfast before they come in. We found that our employees were stopping to get a quick meal on the way to their jobs, so we decided that serving breakfast was much more efficient and beneficial for everybody.

Every morning at 7:00 a.m., we serve at least one hot dish along with some smaller quick options (like breakfast bars or yogurt). Employees help themselves to a meal, start talking with their teams to get an idea of what was going on yesterday, and discuss what will happen over the coming day.

We want to do the best we can for every person on our team. If you’re interested in joining us, visit WislerJobs.com to view and apply to open positions. For questions, reach out to the team at Wisler Plumbing and Air by contacting us online or giving us a call at 540-483-9382.
