- Use cold water when running your garbage disposal. Cold water solidifies grease so your disposal can get rid of it more effectively.
- Installing low flow shower heads and faucet aerators can save up to 30,000 gallons of hot water a year for a family of four.
- A water heater uses 3% to 6% of energy your household consumes even when you are not using it. Installing a timer can reduce stand by time and energy loss.
- A shower that last more than four minutes usually uses more water than a bath.
- Wash clothes in cold or warm water. A cold water rinse is always sufficient.
- Lower your water heater thermostat between 120-130 degrees Fahrenheit. This will save you money and reduce your risk of burns from tap water.
- Repair or replace dripping faucets promptly. A faucet dripping at a rate of one drop per second wates 2700 gallons per year.
