I think what makes a good plumber is the same thing that makes a good person: it all starts with integrity and strength of character. If there’s an individual who knows everything about plumbing and is better at it than anyone else in the vicinity, they still aren’t a good plumber if they lack integrity and character.
I also think that a good plumber is someone who can communicate in a manner that helps people understand what their problems are, what needs to be done, and how the task will be completed. Clear communication is the key to someone feeling satisfied with a provided service. If a plumber can’t communicate clearly, it will become difficult for a high level of satisfaction to be reached.
Sadly, I run into people all the time who know about plumbing, but can’t hold a conversation. The main problem arises when someone is paying for a service but they don’t even understand exactly what they’re paying for.
A good plumber is also organized, efficient, and understanding of the fact that time is money. Time is more valuable today than it ever has been. We all have more responsibilities and we’re constantly going to our next destination, wherever that might be. Our lives are simply more fast-paced now than 50 years ago. An efficient plumber will value someone’s time and make the most of it.
Of course, I don’t think that there’s one perfect definition of a good plumber that would be acceptable to everyone. It’s a little bit different for each person—we all have the criteria that’s most important to us. But in my opinion, I’d base my measuring stick off of someone who’s full of integrity, strong of character, able to communicate clearly, competent to perform the work, and knowledgable.
