Conventional Water Heater
Wisler Plumbing and Air offers standard water heaters in accordance with the 2015 energy efficient mandates set by the government. Two primary things you should consider when purchasing a conventional tanked water heater is the size and the efficiency of the unit. The size matters because it’s in direct correlation to how much hot water is needed within a short amount of time. Tank water heaters maintain a set amount of water and if you have teenagers, this is certainly something to think about. You don’t want to be stuck in the shower freezing cold because your kids used all the hot water. If you have teenagers, consider a tankless water heater. All conventional water heaters have to heat the water. Some systems use electricity while others use gas. The amount of energy that’s needed to heat the water has a great impact on your utility bills. Make sure you review the energy rating with your technician to understand what you should expect when comes to paying for turning cool water in to hot water.
With a power vent system, the heat is blown out a sidewall instead of a chimney. It’s a good solution for energy efficient, tightly built homes, where a natural draft is difficult to establish. As with conventional water heaters, the size and the efficiency rating of the heater you select are important factors in choosing the system for your home. You need to consider how much hot water your household uses and how much you’re willing to spend on your utility bill to heat your water.
Choosing the Right Water Heater
Most water heaters have an average lifespan of 8-12 years. If your water heater is heading into its unpredictable teens, you should start thinking about getting a new water heater.
You Should Know
April 16, 2015, the Federal Government invoked new regulations on the efficiency of newly manufactured water heaters, giving rise to significant changes in the products manufactured from that point forward.
What This Means To You
- To meet the higher energy ratings stipulated by the 2015 regulations, manufacturers increased the amount of insulation built into the tanks. As a result, the tanks are now taller and wider. If your water heater is located in an open area with plenty of space, the size increase won’t be an issue. However, if you live in a condo, a townhouse, or a small home that requires your water heater to be hidden in a small enclosed area like a closet or under the stairs, 2 inches may mean that you’ll need a smaller water tank to fit in the same space.
- 80 gallon standard electric and gas water heaters are no longer available. If you currently have an 80 gallon electric or gas water heater, you’ll have to replace it with a different option when the time comes.
Why Size Matters
Tank water heaters hold a fixed amount of water. The amount of hot water available is a direct correlation to the size of your tank. When that water in the tank is depleted, the tank refills and heats the water. If your family has a penchant for long showers this is certainly something to keep in mind. You don’t want to be jumping out of a shocking cold shower because your kids used all the hot water.
All conventional water heaters have to heat the water. Some systems use electricity, while others use gas. The type and amount of energy used to heat the water in your tank significantly impact your utility bills.
Your Wisler technician will review the various energy ratings with you so you’ll know what to expect when it comes to paying for transforming cool water into hot water.
With all the conventional and non-conventional water heater options available, choosing the right hot water heater can be a little mind-boggling. Wisler Plumbing and Air will guide you through the process by helping you identify what factors are the most important to you.
