Why We Believe in Treating Every Customer like Our Grandmother

Wisler Plumbing & Air is a very family-oriented company, and our family is very important to us. I’ve often said that we should treat people the same, no matter what space we’re in—whether that’s at our home or in our business, and whether it’s with a client or with one of our family members. That’s a principle I try to live by: be kind to others no matter who they are and what relationship you have with them.

I try to treat the people that we serve no differently than I would treat my own family. It can be challenging to follow through at times, because we might be so busy that it’s hard to give attention to someone, or because it’s necessary for the business to be profitable and time is money. Although we might not always get it right, we definitely try our best.

For any successful business, I think it’s important that we stay true to our roots. That is, we need to understand where we came from and that our customers are the ones who allow us to stay in business. Therefore, we owe a tremendous amount to the clients who’ve trusted us to work in their home and maintain their systems. We have to make sure we don’t get out of touch with who really keeps us going. My grandmother has given me so much, and my clients have given me a tremendous amount as well. In that respect, they’re one and the same.

We all have the usual things that we’re thankful for, so instead of just listing them out I want to share a little bit about why I’m thankful for them.

First off, I’m thankful for God—I’m thankful for His grace in my life and in my church family as well. We run a business with a team of employees and lots of customers. The reason I’m thankful for God is because we need some sort of moral compass guiding us to do the right thing and setting the example for how to treat people, whether that’s our clients or our employees. We receive this truth from our background of faith, which comes from an ongoing relationship with a church. It helps in all areas of my life just to make sure that I’m grounded in a moral path.

Next, I’m thankful for our community. Our families live in this community and our clients have supported me, my family, and this organization in so many different ways. That includes the service members in military, police officers, and all other public service officials. We live in an outstanding community and we greatly appreciate our clients in the area we serve. They’ve been kind and loyal to us, so we definitely give them our gratitude.

We have an awesome team within our organization, so I’m thankful for each and every team member, their contributions, and how well they serve the clients that make up our community. But sometimes we forget to mention the families who sometimes might miss our team members and would want them at home while they’re out serving the community. Those families make sacrifices for our team members, and we’re definitely thankful for their support.

Thanks, Dad. You’re a big part of who we are—in terms of this organization and with me and my background. When someone asks why I say, “Thanks, Dad,” The most obvious thing is that he raised me, gave me the opportunity within his business, and taught me a trade. But I would really be doing a disservice if I didn’t bring both of my parents into this. I learned a lot from both of them, obtained had a lot of opportunities from both of them, and they have done very well as parents.

Even though these might be some of the usual things we’re thankful for, I hope you have a little bit more insight as to why they mean so much to me.

1. Customer Feedback

Businesses simply would not be in business if it wasn’t for the customers. There are other important functions of a business, of course, but customer feedback lets you know exactly what the satisfaction level is. There’s no better way to grow your business than through word of mouth, which is why feedback is such an important consideration—not just for any service company—but for any business in general.

2. Team Members

You can’t accomplish much without having good team members. These are the people in front of clients, creating satisfaction. A solid team starts with making sure that you’re recruiting and hiring top-quality individuals, so that you’ll have a team that is able to provide a high level of service to satisfied clients.

3. Training and Development

Once you’ve built a great team, you’ll have to focus on training and development of those team members. This is very important because if we’re not growing, we’re probably slipping and declining.

4. Profit

If you run a for-profit company, you have to make a profit to sustain the business. Therefore, the pricing (and cost) structures of the company are very important. You shouldn’t just guess at how much something should cost—you should instead know exactly what your costs are and set the price of your product or service accordingly. By basing your price upon what your costs are and how much of a margin you need to run a sustainable business, you will be able to provide for your employees and be there for your clients.

5. Managing Costs

From a management standpoint, you must make sure that you’re properly managing the cost of materials and labor that you’re paying your employees. These are the two biggest ongoing expenditures of any business (especially in our industry). Make sure you are being efficient from a labor standpoint, and also make sure you’re managing and negotiating the material costs to keep within your pricing structure so you can sustain into the future.

What is DIY for a Septic Tank?

We might not normally think that DIY and septic systems go hand-in-hand, but there are actually some things that anybody can do to maintain a septic tank so it will work optimally.

Bacteria and Your System

Onsite septic tanks mainly rely on bacteria to do their job. However, today’s society uses antibacterial agents in a wide variety of products like soap, hand sanitizer, bathroom products, and even some laundry detergents. The first thing someone can do would be to introduce some sort of supplemental bacteria. The widespread use of antibacterial products has been harmful to the septic industry because it reduces a septic system’s ability to break down and decompose matter that goes down the tank. If you do continue to use any type of antibacterial products, you’ll need to supplement the septic system with helpful bacteria. We carry a product called BioOne, which contains living, breathing bacteria that can be safely flushed down the toilet to recharge the septic system. (These kinds of products can also be found online.)

Safe Products

Next, be aware of what type of toilet paper you use. Fluffy, heavy toilet paper might not be the best kind for a septic system whereas a thinner product which decomposes faster will definitely be helpful. Aside from toilet paper, someone might also want to be careful about what gets put down the septic system. Do not flush anything down that doesn’t decompose easily. Fibrous cleaning products such as Clorox wipes, general purpose cleaning wipes, or baby wipes will not decompose quickly and could build up over time. You definitely want to avoid flushing down any toiletry products too.

Regular Maintenance

This last item isn’t something you’ll do entirely by yourself, but you can definitely make the phone call. I would definitely recommend having someone inspect your septic system at least every 10 years. You might also want to have the system pumped out to make sure it’s clean. It might not need to be pumped out if it’s a well-operating septic system, but you definitely don’t want to wait too long to find out if a problem exists. (By then, you could have ruined your drain field.) Inspection every 10 years is most important just to make sure everything is working properly.

Although I don’t claim to be an expert in restaurants, I do love food. For anyone who’s looking for a great place to eat in Roanoke, here are ten restaurants that I think everyone should try (in no particular order). There might even be a hidden gem in my list that not too many people know about.

Carlos Brazilian International Cuisine – This restaurant has some really good steaks. It’s more of an evening dining experience, and the interior dining room has a magnificent view of the Roanoke Valley.

Beamer’s 25 – This is a low-key spot located downtown that serves burgers and pizza. They have a full bar as well. The restaurant was spun off by Frank Beamer, who is the ex-head coach of the Virginia Tech football team.

Local Roots Restaurant – This is a newer restaurant that serves American food. It’s located in the Grandin area.

The River and Rail – This restaurant serves American food with a southern twist. It spins off of the Roanoke River and the history of railroad in our area. If you’re looking for a cool southern experience right on the river, this is the place to visit.

Lucky Restaurant – This French-American restaurant has a lot of variety in their menu.

Scratch Biscuit Company – This is a really good breakfast and brunch spot. As the name implies, they make their biscuits from scratch right onsite.

Table 50 – Located in downtown Roanoke, Table 50 is more of an evening dining spot, but they also do lunch.

Texas Tavern – This is a very unique spot. Don’t expect a fancy fine dining restaurant—it’s a very old, tiny building stuck on the side of a much taller structure. I think it only seats 8 people at a time. It might not be the cleanest place, but they serve some good food.

Alejandro’s – This is another downtown spot that serves Mexican food. What I really love about them is their salsa bar. If you want some good eats, check out this spot.

Mission Barbecue – This place is located by Towers Shopping Center. They have several locations, but it’s just a really great restaurant to get barbecue in the Roanoke area.

When someone from another part of the country thinks of Virginia, the first things that come to mind are probably Washington, D.C. (in northern Virginia around Alexandria) along with Virginia Beach and Norfolk. But Virginia is a very diverse state—areas like the Roanoke Valley are quite different from the first places that come to mind. For anyone who’s new to the area, here are a few things you should know.

We are in the Blue Ridge Mountains where there’s a tremendous amount of outdoor activities to do, including hiking, kayaking, and canoeing. Smith Mountain Lake, which is about 30 minutes away, has boating, water sports, dining, and lots more.

The Roanoke Valley is also very rich with culture and history. Much of our initial history is centered around the railroad in our area. In fact, Roanoke started off as a railroad town, and Norfolk & Southern had been around here since back in the 1920s. Although they no longer have a main hub in this area, we’re still very much a company town. Carillion, which is a medical company, is now a very prevalent source of employment and education in the Roanoke Valley. They brought several hospitals, colleges, and schools to our area.

While there are some small progressive pockets in Roanoke, by and large this is a conservative rural place. People who visit the area are also usually pleasantly surprised by how great the airport is, especially due to the city’s size. It makes travel in and out of the city very pleasant. If you want to venture to the areas surrounding Roanoke Valley, you’ll find some interesting places like Virginia Tech, with is about 30 minutes south of us. James Madison University is about an hour up in Charlottesville. Aside from Roanoke’s rich culture centered around food and music, you’ll be sure to find lots of interesting things to do in our region.
